    Textvorschlag: Hon. Mrs Prime Minister / Hon. Senator Ludwig: Every year, around three million sheep are shipped from Australia to the Middle East, just to be slaughtered. The long sea journey takes on average 16 days, and on-board conditions are horrific. Tier upon tier of animals are stacked on deck; each tier containing thousands of sheep, crammed into overcrowded, poorly ventilated pens. Many suffer hunger, thirst, heat stress and exhaustion; many more suffer injuries and disease. Many die before their journey’s end. Of those who do survive the ordeal, their suffering is still not over once they reach land as there are often no ramps for loading or unloading animals on and off the trucks, forcing them to jump, fall, or be dragged and thrown. Their onward journeys in stifling heat can cause yet further suffering. So I urge you to end the live exports of Australian farm animals in view of the suffering caused by long journeys and in view of the risk of severe mishandling and inhumane slaughter of the animals after these appalling journeys.
